Packaging Maketes
Here is the packaging net which i have produced for the coasters. it should be the size of the finished book and also fit the 4 coasters perfectly so they can't move around. it is a flat pack and we plan to have one side which you can open.
The packaging works perfectly so now we just need to create a design and choose the right stock for the job.

Packaging Design
While Max was concentrating on finishing the book i started to work on the packaging for the coasters. We talked about how the design should be previously as we wanted all the products to fit into a sleeve. So Ideally we need a thin design which will be a similar shape to the book.

Book Layout
Here Max has put together a InDesign Document of what we want the Book to look like. Max took the leed on the books layout due to his good type and layout skills.
The first pages would be 20 samples of paper available by Fedrigoni's Imaginative colours and then the back pages will be the information about the company and the imaginative colours pack.
I am very happy with the way it has turned out and am excited to see what it will look like printed and lazer cut.

Finished Coasters
These are the finished coasters which are now stuck down. The method i chose to stick these down was with spray mount. I am thoroughly happy with the final product. They are a good thickness and despite the hole in the middle they are able to hold a cup comfortably without spilling.
Ideally we would have like to make them water proof but a lot of work went into each one so wouldn't want to ruin them and have to make them again.
We have talked to James in the Print room and researched into single side laminate which would ba a possibility.

Lazer Cutting
Me and Max went down to lazer cutting to cut out the version of the coasters we plan to put in the sample pack we plan to send out. In total we plan to cut out 6 designs fitting these all on A3 sheets. It took time to lazer cut as we had a specific system needed to get perfect or the colours would of gone wrong.
Here are the final cuts from our morning of lazer cutting. Due to our anal naming system we were able to get the right colours for each coaster relatively easy considering we had 90 shields scattered infront of us.
Here are the offcuts from the centre of the coaster. have no real use for them but will keep them just incase they end up having a use.

Here are all the finished coasters in all there glory. Me and Max are extremely happy with how they have turned out and are excited to take this project further now we have mad something we are happy with.
Coaster mock-ups
Here i have experimented with making a set of coasters we plan to lazer cut. i Have made 3 different samples to see which idea works the best. We decided to use the shield of the Fedrigoni logo to add a resemblance to the brand.

Paper Stock
I went and purchased some coloured stock from leeds university shop as they had more of a variety than our own library and keeping the costs relatively low but the quality is still high, the gsm range is from 140 to 200 so they are similar to what Fedrigoni are selling also. I arranged the paper in different orders which would work as a group on which we could cut out our coasters. I came up with 4 different arrangements which i am happy with.
Layering Ideas
From my drawings i have picked out my favourite design with the shield idea and experimented with the layout and positioning of the shield. i looked into adding colour but i am not sure what colours will be available to buy so i was more just looking into composition rather than colour.
Here i just changed the scale
Here i did scale and rotation
Here i did more scale and rotation

Research
Picking at the Fedrigoni brief and doing a good amount of research into the company and there products i can safely say that this company are doing everything wrong to appeal to a design audience. There samples they give out aren't impressive or laid out nicely or with any print on them. They just put a horrible sticker or a photocopied sheet with the information on it.
It seems like they refuse to spend any money or time appealing to there audience companies like GFSmith and Team send out amazing books with there samples on with different printing techniques or paper stocks, which is designed well and something you take your time to look at and keep for a reference.

New Concept Statement
We had discussed these ideas in the seminar but this is what max wrote up for it afterwards.
Brief title:
YCN Fedrigoni Brief.
What is the problem?
- People aren't really aware of who Fedrigoni are
- Their new paper range is unknown
- Paper is seen as a dying medium
- It is unclear what they're selling
- Creatives are using other papers
We intend to...
inform about/ promote / persuade the UK market to use Fedrigoni's 'Imaginative colours' selection tool to
a group of...
Creatives and freelancers working within the UK design industry
that...
when they need creative, high quality stock options, Fedrigonis 'imaginative colours' range will provide them with that. Allowing them to create their very own innovative, quality design solutions.
In order to achieve this we will produce...
A mail out pack and advertising campaign that will be seen by creatives through editorial advertisements and delivered directly to graphic design agencies specialising in print.
This will be produced using...
Mainly high-end digital print along with other processes like embossing, foiling and spot varnishing that will increase the appeal and show the quality of print possible to a design based audience.

The Briefs
We had a discussion about the all the briefs and Max really like the Fedrigoni paper brief and i preferred the Google one. We had discussed both indebted about both and also discussed the ones we initially didn't think of to see if there was one that would of been good to look further into.
We were given a task to come up with 2 Briefs we did like and 1 brief we hated and then give 5 reasons why.
Fedrigoni
Content // subject
- Fedrigoni
- quality
- Tactilty
- Paper
- Ultra-functional
Media // Distribution
- paper
- direct mail
- advertising
- newsletters

Audience // Context
- UK market
- top fashion labels
- design industry
- boutique publishers?
- large businesses with global reputations
Product // Deliverables
- paper / samples
- information booklet
- pack
- posters
- envelope
5 things the brief asked us to do :
- Promote & showcase 'imaginative colours' paper range
- Be original
- Create a 'fully integrated' campaign
- Inspire designers to use their paper
- Keep paper alive as a medium
5 problems we're asked to solve :
- Industry doesn't know about their paper range and selection tool
- The distribution of the information - not digital..?
- Paper as a dying medium
- Prove the quality of the product
- Explain the product - What they're actually selling - and them as a brand.

Fedrigoni
- Full campaign, No restrictions, very open
- Print Brief, stock
- Chance to experiment with a range of products
- Able to look into lots of printing techniques
- Aiming at a design led audience.
Google
- Open to experimenting
- Recognised company huge target audience
- Can produce more than just packaging
- Visual style already strong so would be a challenge living up to the name
- Testing your brain for innovative ideas.
Industry Trust...HATE
- Difficult subject matter
- Impossible challenge
- No visual connection
- Badly written
- Don't believe in what they are saying
We talked about reason for liking these briefs and found that as a pair we are more suited for the fedrigoni. we then had to pick holes in the brief to see where the problems about what they were asking and how the brief was written

New Partner
After the poster feedback i really wasn't sure who i would like to work with i didn't expect the diversity of people to comment on my posters. I had Max approach me asking if i would like to work with him. Max is someones work which i like and he is very committed to the course pushing out a high standard of work. I feel we could make a strong partnership and am very pleased with max as a partner as i feel our skills will compliment each other.
We then filled out a contract without communicating.
Why have you chosen to work with your creative partner? What are your aims?
Max has a similar design style to me but we have different methods of working. such as i am very much someone who has a bunch of ideas and make is someone who perfects and develops his initial one.
He is very committed and work tremendously hard.
Good software knowledge. Mainly on illustrator while i am more photoshop based.
He is very technical with his type skills compared to the decorative style which i carry.
What are your specific areas of creative interest in the brief?
Packaging design is a area i would like to do as i feel its one of my strengths.
In group senareos i like to take a lead in the design aspect of things. not because i think i am better but its just the type of person i am.
Ideas based good at concept work.
Logo design and branding is one of my biggest strengths.
Print based design. Gaining skills in printing methods further.
What specific design skills do you have to offer in relation to your collaboration? How do you intend to use them?
Logo and branding designs
Software skill. Mainly Photoshop but can use Illustrator well also.
Packaging
Colour. I am experimenting more with colour so i would like to put this to good use.
What specific non-design skills do you have to offer in relation to your collaboration? How do you intend to use them?
I am a good thinker. I can think of a lot of ideas for one issue.
I also think i am a good contributor and leader in a group situation.
What will your specific roles be in the collaboration in relation to your collaboration?
Ideas and coming up with the solution on what to do.
Motivator. i feel that having someone to rely on will make me more motivated and i am good at motivating others.
Drawing skills are pretty good so i may take control on design sheets etc.
What will your individual responsibilities be in relation to your collaboration?
I will have to document all my work on my blog.
Designing i will have to use my own skills to solve the brief and then collaborate these designs with my partner.
Research. i need to do my own research to help solve the brief.
Feedback from Posters
The poster i made about myself we had the class write about on design which they liked and one content. i had 5 people say they like the design of the poster but none on the concept which i expected as i only used single words.
Initial thoughts on YCN Briefs
Google Brief
I initially like the google brief as i enjoy packaging and i had ideas flowing as soon as i read through the brief. I Feel like this brief is very open and isn't asking for a simple idea they want to to be inventive an innovative just like google are. Not sure reading the brief the packaging they are asking for has much use or will ever be made. The internet is the future and thats where google product are available and it convenient unlike what they are proposing.
Graze
Graze just don't know what they want they need to be told what is right. They are obviously struggling with there product and need fresh new design to liven the company up a bit. They don't want this they don't want to change the logo to much and you cant change the structure of the packaging. Don't really like the sound of this brief it just feel oddly controlled considering what needs to be done.
Fedrigoni
Here i wasn't taken away by the brief. It was more the companies take on who they wanted to target i am not to sure thats someone i could relate to as it was a fashion based and im not sure what they would want to do with paper products. On the other hand i think it would be good exploring printing techniques and potentially experimenting with paper craft and something 3D based.

Picking a Partner Process
We had to design 2 A3 posters to demonstrate our skills as a designer to attract a potential collaborator for the upcoming brief.
These are my designs which i had come up with. I listed a few traits i have as a designer and shortlisted the 5 we needed. i wanted to demonstrate my skills listed in my design. I used the type as image editing it and putting them together. i added a gradient in the background to show my use of colour.
Here i had to list the skills i was looking to work with in this project.
